How to Calculate Years Ago: A Step-by-Step Guide
Working out a date in the past is one of the most common calendar questions. The good news is that whole years follow a simple rule, with just one edge case to remember.
Step 1: Keep the month and day
A year is a calendar unit, not a fixed number of days. To go back 15 years from March 3, 2026, you keep March 3 and subtract 15 from the year: March 3, 2011.
Step 2: Watch for February 29
If your starting date is February 29 and the target year is not a leap year, there is no February 29 to land on. The standard convention, used by spreadsheets and most software, is to use February 28 instead.
Step 3: Find the weekday
The weekday shifts by one for each ordinary year and by two for each leap year you cross. Counting that by hand is error-prone, which is why the years ago calculator shows the weekday for you.
Step 4: Count the days, if you need them
Years vary between 365 and 366 days, so "10 years ago" is not always the same number of days. For a precise day count, use the date difference calculator.
Quick check
To find only the year, subtract: 2026 minus 37 is 1989. The what year was it calculator does this instantly and tells you whether that year was a leap year.
